Buying a PCM Online: What to Check Before You Order

Buying an engine computer online can save you a lot over a dealer — if you order the right one. Here’s the short checklist that prevents the most common mistakes.

1. Confirm exact fitment

Year, make, model, and engine size all matter, and so does the hardware/part number on your existing unit. A 4.8L and a 5.3L of the same truck can need different modules. When in doubt, match your part number or give the seller your VIN.

2. Make sure it’s programmed to your VIN

A module that isn’t pre-programmed leaves you paying a shop to flash it. Buy one that’s coded to your VIN before shipping so it’s plug and play — here’s why programming matters.

3. Check the warranty

A strong warranty is the clearest sign the seller trusts their own testing. Look for lifetime coverage, not 30 days.

4. Watch for core charges and shipping

Some sellers add a core charge (a deposit you only get back by returning your old unit) and charge for shipping. The best don’t — no core charge, free shipping.

5. Confirm it’s tested

A quality unit is bench-tested before it ships, not just pulled and resold.
