Refurbished vs New PCM: Which Should You Buy?

When your engine computer fails, you’ll see two options: a brand-new dealer module or a refurbished OEM unit. The price gap is large. Here’s what actually differs and how to choose.

New from the dealer

A new module is exactly that — but it’s the most expensive route, usually still needs programming (often a separate charge), and for older vehicles may not even be available anymore.

Refurbished OEM

A refurbished unit is a genuine OEM module that’s been inspected, repaired where needed, and fully tested. For the vast majority of vehicles it performs identically to new, at a fraction of the cost — and for discontinued parts it’s often the only option.

What actually matters

  • Is it tested? A quality refurbished unit is bench-tested before it ships.
  • Is it programmed? VIN programming should be included, not extra.
  • What’s the warranty? A strong warranty is the real signal of quality.
  • Any core charge? The best sellers don’t require you to send your old unit back.

Our approach

Our refurbished OEM engine computers are tested in-house, programmed to your VIN, backed by a lifetime warranty, shipped free, and carry no core charge — new-part reliability without the dealer price. Curious about the numbers? See our PCM replacement cost guide, or call (516) 494-7838.
