You replaced your engine computer, the car ran fine for a few weeks, and now it has failed again. This is more common than it should be, and in most cases the replacement did not fail on its own – something in the vehicle destroyed it, exactly as it destroyed the first one.

The most common cause: a shorted ignition coil
This is the one that catches most people. Ignition coils are driven directly by transistors inside the engine computer. When a coil develops an internal short, it feeds voltage back down that circuit and burns out the driver inside the module.
The sequence is predictable. A coil starts to fail, the module sets misfire codes, the module dies, you replace the module, and the same faulty coil kills the new one within weeks.
This is well documented on the Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar – used across Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Journey, Charger, Challenger, Town and Country and Grand Caravan – and on Ford modular V8s. It also affects the Jeep 3.7L V6.
What to do: if your module failed alongside misfire codes, replace every ignition coil and all spark plugs at the same time as the module, using OEM parts. Not just the cylinder that was missing. A related symptom is the alternator failing to charge, because the same internal circuit handles that function on some vehicles.
Charging system faults
An alternator with a failing diode puts AC ripple onto the vehicle’s DC supply. Modules are not designed for that, and prolonged exposure damages them.
Overcharging does the same thing faster. If your replacement module failed and the battery was also boiling, bulging or repeatedly flat, test the alternator output and ripple before fitting a third one.
Grounds and voltage drop
Corroded or loose ground straps force the module to operate outside its designed voltage range. Symptoms look like internal failure, and over time the module genuinely does fail.
Check the engine-to-body strap, the battery-to-body connection and the module’s own ground point. On older vehicles these are frequently the real problem and cost nothing to fix.
Water intrusion
Many modules sit low in the engine bay, in the footwell, or behind a kick panel. A blocked sunroof drain, a leaking heater core, a failed windscreen seal or a damaged door membrane will let water reach them.
If your module failed and you have damp carpet, condensation inside the cabin, or a musty smell, find the leak before fitting a replacement. Otherwise you will be buying a third module.
Jump starting and welding
Reversed jump leads, jump starting from a running vehicle at high revs, or arc welding on the vehicle without disconnecting the battery can all destroy a module instantly. If the failure happened immediately after one of these events, that is almost certainly the cause – and the vehicle itself may be fine.
Interrupted reflashes
If a dealer or workshop was reprogramming the module when voltage dropped or the process was interrupted, the memory can be left corrupted. This typically sets a P0601 checksum error. Sometimes a successful reflash recovers it.
Aftermarket electrical work
Poorly installed alarms, remote starters, stereo amplifiers and light bars are a recurring cause. Anything that taps into a module-controlled circuit, or shares a ground with one, can put voltage where it does not belong. If accessories were fitted shortly before the failure, have the wiring inspected.
What to check before fitting another module
- Load test the battery, and on diesels test both batteries separately
- Test alternator output voltage and AC ripple
- Inspect and clean all main ground connections
- Check for water intrusion around the module location
- If misfire codes were present, replace all coils and plugs with OEM parts
- Inspect the module connector for corroded, bent or backed-out pins
- Review any recent electrical work or accessory installations
