If your Power Stroke is hard to start, stalling, or cranking without firing, there are three separate modules that could be responsible. Replacing the wrong one is expensive and common. This guide explains what each does, how the symptoms differ, and how to test before you buy.

The three modules
PCM – Powertrain Control Module
The main computer. It manages fuel delivery strategy, emissions, the TorqShift transmission and communication with the rest of the truck. On the 6.0L it sits under the bonnet on the driver side.
FICM – Fuel Injection Control Module (6.0L)
The 6.0L uses hydraulically actuated injectors that need a 48 volt signal to open. The FICM generates that voltage. The PCM decides when to inject; the FICM provides the power to physically do it.
IDM – Injection Driver Module (7.3L)
The 7.3L equivalent. It generates the high voltage that fires the injectors and reports back to the PCM. Same principle, different generation.
Telling them apart by symptom
Points to the FICM on a 6.0L
- Hard starting when cold that improves once warm
- Rough running or a miss on several cylinders at once
- Extended cranking before the engine catches
- Injector circuit codes on multiple cylinders simultaneously
- Symptoms that worsen in cold weather
The defining test is FICM output voltage. A healthy module holds close to 48 volts under load. Readings in the low 40s indicate a failing FICM even if the truck still runs. This is measurable with most scan tools and is the single most useful diagnostic on the 6.0L.
Points to the IDM on a 7.3L
- Crank with no start at all
- A miss isolated to specific cylinders
- Sudden loss of power while driving
- Injector driver codes
Points to the PCM
- No communication with a scan tool
- Transmission behaving erratically alongside engine faults
- Internal module codes in the P0601 to P0606 range
- Multiple unrelated systems misbehaving together
Worth knowing: PCM failure on these trucks is less common than people assume, and the symptoms are often intermittent. Diagnose the FICM or IDM and the glow plug system before condemning the main computer.
Rule these out first
All three modules can be imitated by cheaper faults. On a diesel, check these before spending anything:
- Batteries. These trucks use two. One weak battery drags the other down and produces low-voltage behaviour across every module. Load test both separately.
- Grounds. Corroded engine-to-body straps cause faults that look exactly like module failure.
- Glow plug system. On the 6.0L a failed glow plug control module produces hard cold starting that is easily blamed on the FICM.
- FICM connector. Water intrusion at the connector is common and produces intermittent faults.
Record your strategy code
Super Duty modules are identified by a part number and a separate strategy code. The strategy code is printed on the module connector rather than the casing, so locate the module and write down both before ordering. Compare the connector shape and mounting points with your existing unit as well.
Most suppliers will not accept a module back once it has been plugged in, so the five minutes spent confirming this is worth it.
What this costs
Ford dealers commonly quote around 400 dollars simply to reflash an existing module, before any parts cost. A replacement PCM through a dealer runs considerably higher. Owners on the Power Stroke forums regularly describe waiting around two weeks for core-exchange suppliers, because those companies will not ship until your old unit reaches them.
